Emergency Management Mtg. December 16, 2008
7:00PM Meeting was called to order.
Present: Charles Harner, BJ O’Brien, Chris Bouchard, Don Chaffee, Richard Phair, Donald Hawley, Clayton Chaffee, Andrew Pyenson, A Representative from WMECO,
Sandy Pinkham, Chris Morris
Discussion ensued regarding the efforts that WMECO was taking during the storm. A representative from WMECO was present. They had set up a command center at the Fire Department and explained their plan to try to get everyone up and running with electricity again.
Verizon phones were down due to the number of poles that were down. AT&T cell phone service was also unavailable.
The power for the building did not work on the South side of Town Hall. Don Chaffee will ask his electrician to find out why generator was not hooked up to that side of building.
Chief Charles Harner discussed purchasing more shelter signs and discussed the Town Hall being manned 24/7 for the shelter. Perhaps we could get some volunteers to come stay and help with the cooking.
The Selectmen discussed the Senior Room being open during shelter hours so people have access to a TV.
The Highway Department and Emergency Committee need to have better communication if this is to ever happen again. The Fire Department had to help the Highway Department with clean up. MEMA has requested a monetary figure of damages for FEMA. The National Guard was sent out by MEMA.
The Red Cross brought in cots, blankets and some food for the shelter. The Committee discussed possibly storing military reserve food in the pantry. Charles Harner thought we should keep at least 6 days worth of food for approximately 100 people. Charles suggested that Heather Venne order the utensils, pots, pans, etc. for shelter.
Selectmen Pyenson suggested that Don Chaffee move the gas valve for the stoves to make them more accessible.
It was decided that the Emergency Management Committee will meet on January 20th to discuss further issues.
Meeting Adjourned 8:30pm
